How Do I Find An Isshinryu Karate Dojo? by Rob Jacob |

I get many emails asking me if I know of an Isshinryu karate school in such
and such city, or state. I live in Rochester New York, and if you ask me
about schools in this area, I can tell you. Outside of this area, my
knowledge is limited to what I have found by doing internet searches,
and following links on my page.
First, check my dojo listing page. If you don't one find a school in your area listed there, try the following things.
Check out my Organizations page. Many of the pages put on the web by Isshinryu karate organizations, have
dojo lists. Search through these.
Another way is to do a Google.com search. Try searches such as
"Isshinryu Buffalo" or "Isshin Ryu Seattle" or whatever, and then
examine the found pages for evidence of an Isshin Ryu dojo in the area.
Yet another way, is a little more old fashioned, but put out the Yellow
Pages, and start calling schools, and asking if they teach Isshinryu, or
know of a dojo in the area that does. Also check with community centers, and local colleges.
Even another way, is to visit the local martial arts supply store in the
area, and ask them if they know of any dojos that teach Isshinryu
nearby.
If there are any karate tournaments in your area, attend them as a spectator. Look for Isshinryu patches. Talk to people and ask them if they know of any Isshinryu schools in the area.
With some effort, maybe you will find an Isshinryu school, or schools.
Maybe there is a school in a nearby town. For years, I have been making
a 75 mile round trip two or three times a week to practice karate at a particular school. More than once I have made the trip in near blizzard conditions, Yngwie Malmsteen blasting from the stereo, to get to class for the opportunity to train.
If there are absolutely no Isshinryu karate dojos in your area, you may also look for Goju Ryu schools, or Shorin Ryu schools. Since Isshinryu is a synthesis of these two styles, they are closely related.
If all else fails, buy a Tae Bo video tape. Good luck!
