Learning to be Practical in Your Isshin-Ryu Art by Samuel Saddiq |

As I practice Isshin-Ryu Karate [no disrespect to the various styles of Martial
Arts and its Practitioners], I've always been thinking and reflecting on what I
can be working on to be ever so EFFECTIVE, ECONOMICAL, PRACTICAL and anything
that's beneficial for me and my fellow Practitioners at the Dojo where I
frequently go to. To me personally, on the things I've learned on my journeys in
training, learning from my Sensei and others about the defensive/offensive tactics
of fighting; as well as for reading Martial Art books and magazines, also going
to the Martial Art websites to see what I can use for my advantage [before that, I
seperate the FAKE form the FACTS] and pass it on to the folks that I'm trainig
with, etc.
With all that been stated above, I've come to the reality of the situation is to
be practical in the Art reserved for self-preservation. Now there might be people
who may be reading my article might say to themselves: "Oh gosh, we're going to
go through this mess with someone who claim to have the REAL KNOWLEDGABLE INSIGHT
of the Martial Arts and he wants all of us to follow him". PLEASE....I'm so far
from that it'll be foolish to claim such hogwash. All I'm stating is that I
aim to encourage the people who train in Isshin-Ryu Karate [as well as for
Practitioners of other Martial Arts also], as well as myself to strive to be
sensible in the Art so that we could defend ourselves and our families from the
people who want to do you harm. The reason why I chose to compose this article
is for the fact that one of the guys that I've trained with, he told me that five
of his sons being attacked by other kids at school and they're being racially
harassed,too.
The father has disclosed to me what going on, and I taught the father some
techniques like: gouging the eyes, kicking at the legs and aiming for the knees
and punch to the throat as well as some elbow shots, too. So, the dad showed
his sons the stuff I've showed him and the next time we met again at the dojo, he
told me that his oldest son was attacked by another kid. When the fight was
going on, his son got the other boy in a headlock and he has TIGHTENED his grip on
that neck. The teachers tried to seperate them and when they got them apart his
son ripped some skin off of that other boys neck. Then I've replied: "Good, I
hope that boy learned his lesson to leave him alone".
Here are some pointers that I use for myself to get prepared when the situation
arises.
1. Train like you're going to war.
2. Ever be realistic in your fighting ability.
3.Learn about the HUMAN ATNATOMY. It can help you where to strike certain areas
of the asailant['s'] body[ies] to end the attack or life [lives], if neccessary.
4. Toughen your body to withstand blows and give blows back.
5. Aim to learn something that'll give you advantage for you skills.
6. Work on the stamina.
7. Get into weapons like guns, knives......whatever it takes to be proficient.
8. HELL WITH THE RULES CONCERNING ON DEFENDING YOURSELF ON THE STREETS!!!!!
9. Get in touch with your "dark animal side". This'll help you to get the edge
when you need to protect yourselves.
10. Leave all the flashiness out of your defense, always practice the K.I.S.S.
method [Keep It Seriously Simple].
There are so much I could add on to this piece that'll become volumes. If I do add
a lot more, there's no end to it virtually. So coming to the conclusion of this
work, I want to share my experiences as a person who trains and see things
differently and give help to those who aim to be better Martial Artists. I'll
state this and I'll be done with the composition. The father had told me that
what I had told him really helps him and his sons on defending themselves from
danger and he's thankful for that. I personally feel that Martial Arts that are
"COMBAT MADE" are not for sport, they're made to help people to defend
themselves and make them better people, too.
The Dojo where I trained at, the major nationality who trained in Ishhin-Ryu
Karate are Black Americans......also other nationalities as well train with us.
The environment which you live in could be the RESULTING FACTOR on how you
train......no jokes about that because I've seen it with my own eyes. Kids from
broken homes who trained at our place become respectable human beings and they
take charge of the matters which they're in with their lives. Therefore, be
real with your training and always aim for improvement.
