  1. Having [dealt with] George Alexander of Yamazato Productions before, I can speak from experience. Alexander's techinque is simple: think of a fancy title, make a pretty box, then put a video tape of some poor home-movie video footage that looks like it was shot on a 1983 model Panasonic video camera.

This video is basically a poor-quality camcorder-made filming of one, typica Uechi-Ryu class at an Okinawan dojo. It includes warmups, drills, kata, etc., all shot in bad lighting and from bad angles. There is some tournament sparring near the end that looks like a 7th generation copy.

There is no narration or explanation of anything. This is not an instructional video. If you went to a dojo in your neighborhood and videotaped a normal class, then played it back again, this is what you would have. If you think that this video will reveal any "power" or "secrets" you will be sorely disappointed. In fact, stay away from ANY videos from Yamazato Productions or anything with the name George Alexander attached to it. ...

  2. Apparently, Yamato Productions have become so notorious for the appalling quality of their videos they have changed their name (again) to Rising Sun Productions, or is it the other way round!.Nothing else has changed however. If a student submitted this video as a high school project the best he or she could expect is an "F". There is nothing good you can say about it. Appalling production values, horrible inaccuracies, and excruciatingly bad presentation all combine to form the archetypal Rising Sun/Yamato/George Alexander video production. Frankly I am surprised that a company as reputable as Amazon.com includes junk like this in their collection.
As far as it being "Another winner for Yamato Productions". If this is a winner then so is Sadam Hussein

  1. I just got done watching this DVD and can't understand why someone would give it such a low and negative rating. I don't see any problem with the quality, it's not digital, but so what.
I found it to be well orchestrated and highly informative about the Uechi Ryu style and the history of it's techniqes. It teaches alot about the style and as I said before the quality is fine and completely acceptable.

  2. I am so glad I bought this video! Wow! This video explains and teaches so much about Uechi Ryu Karate, I don't know how I got along without it. Great for anyone looking to improve their techniques and gain a better insight into this awesome style of Karate.

  3. This dvd demonstrates how powerful uechi ryu can actually be. It's a good dvd for the uechi ryu fan but a better dvd for anyone who has doubted the power found in the uechi ryu style. It's an excellent buy and comes highly recommended from an experienced martial artist.

  4. It's all about a karate lesson going on, and someone video taped it. Those rate 4 stars and above are probably people in the classes who bought it for their own collection. The whole show was shot under poor lighting (I think he does not want the distract the class that was going on.) and quite blurry.

  2. I have been a student of Uechi Ryu since 1979,a fine style for those of short stature.
The previous review would have been more appropriate if it were in english.

  1. This dvd (all three in the series, actually) is advertised as being in NTSC format, but it's actually a PAL disc. Just great if you own a region-free player, but Amazon is incorrectly advertising the product, so be careful when ordering. As a practitioner of Uechi Ryu, I was really looking forward to watching this. It took Amazon about a month to ship out, and after having waited so long, imagine my frustration at learning the discs won't play on my machine.

  2. There is no substitute for training with people at a real dojo, but as far as reviewing techniques or discovering the nuances of a new style this video offers a practical overview of Uechi Ryu Karate from a respected master. Learn knife defense techniques!

  1. If you truely like classical Karate, if you want a true insight to where it all came from and you want to learn about multiple styles - you just hit the gong. I have both volumes of this in VHS. I will get both in DVD.
There is some very good information and outstanding instruction from some devasting Kyoshi's & Hanshi's. The production quality shames Yamazato & Rising Sun Production Co. and eclipses Tsunami (whom I consider to be of above all the rest). You will not be wasting your money. View and enjoy

  2. As someone who has practiced martial arts off and on for over a quarter of a century, I have seen most of the videos that there are to see. I have heard of these videos for years, but only now had the ability to purchase them. For those who are interested in traditional martial arts and especially Okinawan karate, these videos are a gold mine of information. All aspects of karate are covered, including basics (kihon), solo forms (kata), sparring (kumite), and various types of conditioning, some of which need to be seen to be believed. The primary demonstrators are Kiyohide Shinjo and the recently deceased Seiko Toyama of Uechi ryu, Tetsuhiro Hokama and Shigetoshi Senaha of goju ryu, and Yoshimitsu Onaga of shorin ryu, along with several others. There is also a short section dedicated to the karate training used by the Japan Self Defense Forces at the end of Vol. 1. These are not instructional videos, but rather demonstrations of some mid to high level aspects of the arts. The advertising for these videos suggests that the information contained would be most useful for those practitioners second dan black belt and up, and I would agree with that. I highly recommend these videos for anyone interested in real martial arts; my only complaint is that I wish there were more of them.
