1 comments about Chinese karate kung-fu;: Original "Sil lum" system,.
- This book was one of the first authentic, english language books on Kung Fu published. The style portrayed in this book is the Fut Gar Branch of the Sil lum (Southern Shaolin) martial arts. It contains many testimonial letters from martial artists who are now listed in the Martial Arts Hall of Fame. The highlight of this book is that it accurately details the 1st and 2nd forms of the system- Lin Wan Keun, Meng Fu Har Sahn (Continuous Returning Fist, Fierce Tiger Descends Mountain). This book gives you a very clear window on Martials Arts in the 1960's. Leo Fong, who also published a book on this subject, learned it from T. Y. Wong.
When I originally wrote this review I described the Kung Fu style as Fut Gar. New information accurately identifies this syle as a synthesis of Hung and Toy (Choi) Gar syles developed by Leong Tin Chee and further modified by Prof. T. Y. Wong. For more information visit the "Kin Mon" Sil Lum web site. (SKM)

5 comments about Northern Sil Lum Form Number Seven Plum Flower Fist (Unique Literary Books of the World).
- This book was written a while ago by Sifu Wing Lam (Wing Lam Enterprises). It contains background information, warmups, stances, hand positions and all as basic information, and then the book describes the form with accompanying photographs of Sifu Lam demonstrating the movements. Learning forms from books is difficult/impossible, you can purchase the Video from Wing Lam Enterprises (Shaolin #7 Moi Fah), you should have abosolutely no trouble at all learning this form. Even though it is #7, this is usually the 1st or 2nd form taught in shaolin kung fu. The number (1 through 10) are not the number in which the forms are Taught. For what it is, I gave this book 5 stars. Get the video too.
- Si Fu Kwon is a brilliant practitioner of Shaolin (Sil Lum)Kung Fu. He has impeccable form and his instruction is clear and precise. This book is a very good introduction to the latter forms of the core sets of Bak Sil Lum. I find the book good to learn from because I use it in tandem with My own Si Fu's teachings. I only wish Si Fu Kwon would write the rest of the sets into book form!
- This book is limited in its scope, and i think that's the best thing about it. It teaches number seven of the ten basic Shao Lin forms, and little else. It's a great place to start for beginners, or even better for students of Kung Fu who have not been taught short forms in all directions yet. I too wish the author would complete the entire system in a similar fashion, for we could all learn Sil lum kung fu with a minimum of kwoon time. Can't recommend it enough...
- A very good demonstration of the Moi Fah form. Unlike some of the books that came out of Hong Kong in the early 1980's, Kwon Wing Lam includes the applications of the techniques. Also includes Chinese and English table for the techniques of the set, and well written sections on the history of Northern Shaolin (or Sil Lum) and kung fu in general.
- Moi Fah: The Plumb Flower Fist is one of the easiest books on forms to understand. The form itself is clearly photographed, and the author does a great job of explaining what's going on. Applications of techniques are spread throughout the form. Also of value are the warm-ups at the beggining of the book, as well as the explainations of body movements in the back. This is a good book to learn this particular form, and gave me my first exposer to Chinese long boxing. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because of it's limited scope.

5 comments about Secrets of Northern Shaolin Kung-Fu: The History, Form, and Function of Pek Sil Lum (Secrets Of...).
- This is a book on #6 of the northern shaolin style of kung fu. This basic set is usually taught first because of simplicity. The text and interpretation of the set is mediocre at the most. What is special about this book it that the person who is demonstrating the moves, is master Lai Hung himself. For those who know the man, you know what I mean.
- Great job on this book. Very interesting from a historical perspective. It's great seeing Sifu demonstrate, too. Brian, when does the next book with sets 4, 5, 7, and choy-lay fut come out?
- I recently bought this book, and I must say emediately DON'T BUY IT ! Book has about 130 pages, and about half of these book is braging (hope that I used right word). It is possible that Sifu Lai Hung is real master, but this book is only moneymaker! There is only 40-50 pages of practical techniques, and very basic ones too. I would never recomend this book to anyone. There is much better boks like Shaolin Long fist etc.
- Thanks to Mark for telling me about this book. I am so excited to see Sifu Lai Hung's teachings in print. Preservation of Kung-Fu tradition is a very important task. Look forward to see more published on set 4, 5, 7, and spear set.
- A fairly shallow and not so well backed-up look at an underappreciated martial arts discipline. Many of the pictures depict half hearted versions of the techniques, and honestly no serious martial artist should attempt to learn any style from a book. I picked it up on a whim hoping it would focus more on history and philosophy than picture-based instruction.
While not wholly terrible, I am not sure for whom this would be particularly beneficial.
