1 comments about The Itosu Kata of Seito Shito-Ryu [VHS].
- This video is well done from a details point-of-view, from the clean accurate moves to the way each kata is registered by VCR counter for fast random access. This is a great instructional/aide-memoire video.
The timing of the kata themselves is unrealistic; it seems each move is done to a metronome -- great for learning, but unrealistic for later training where many of these kata are practiced. I've never done Kosokun Dai so much like a robot. The beauty of some kata is sacrificed for the benefit of the newer student to the kata. This must have been the intention of Sensei McGuinness in performing these kata. I will refer back to the 18 kata on this video, lookng for details that I have missed in my own practice, until it no longer plays in my VCR.

- If you're looking for some videos demonstrating the traditional katas of Shito-Ryu style and wouldn't mind the picture & sound qualities, this DVD may be a good reference material to you. Here's the actual list and order of the performing katas:
[Part One: Basic Katas Performing Indoor]
PINAN NIDAN
PINAN SHODAN
PINAN SANDAN
PINAN YONDAN
PINAN GODAN
[Part Two: Advanced Katas Performing Outdoor]
BASSI DAI
KOSUKON DAI
JION
SEIENSHIN
SEI PAI
The total run time is about 50 minutes. All the katas are performed by Master Tomiyama. The DVD includes the basic katas Pinans for color belts students and some advanced katas such as Jion, Bassi Dai, and Sei Pai, for brown and black belts students. For each kata, Tomiyama shows in different way so that you can easily pick up the correct forms and movements. He performs each kata in a slow speed version, a correct speed & timing version, and also a different side view version, with the proper 'kiai' points. For the Pinans, Master Tomiyama also shows different application of movements to explain how the kata forms work. It is a great reference material for people to learn and practice the traditional Shito-Ryu katas with this DVD, especially if you're preparing your belt examination.
Unforturnately, the DVD production is quite poor. Both the video and sound qualities are bad. It seems like it's taped in a low-tech video device, transferred to a computer in 320x240 pixel resoluton, and then produced in DVD format. No booklet is found in the keepcase, no DVD feature screen is avaliable but only a 'BEGIN' button to show all the kata performance, and no chapters screen is there to let you select different katas. Among these weakness, it is still a 'not bad' reference material unless you can find a better product out there in the market.
*** Otto Yuen's DVD Special Rating for Shito Ryu Karate Original ***
1. Film Rewatchability: VERY HIGH
2. DVD Featurability: NONE
3. Picture Quality: POOR
4. Sound Quality: POOR

- I bought this for my son who is an orange belt. We live 90kms from his dojo and can only get there once a week. He felt he couldn't keep up now the katas are getting more complex. This has been a fantastic help. The bunki(?) has been particularly helpful as he needs to understand this for his gradings. His sensai has borrowed the DVD and has said he is very impressed with it. The product description said it may only work in Canada and the USA but it works fine on our DVD player in Australia.

- The kata in this DVD are high in application value and historical value. Traditional Karate means kata-derived Karate, and this video illustrates the 4 kata at a pace that is easy to learn and appreciate.

- The kata demonstrated are shown 4 times each, once at a slower learning speed from the front, then again from the back, and then at application speed, also once from the front and once from the back. The layout and content of the video is excellent, however, the quality of the shoot (the actual footage) is not on par with the rest of the production. A good purchase for someone who has trained for awhile and is looking to expand their kata knowledge.
- I'm just going to verify which kata are on this DVD
-Koshiki Rohai [Matsumura no Rohai]
-Nipaipo
-Chinto [Gankaku]
-Chintei
-Tomari Passai
-Sochin [Hakko]
-Unsu [Unshu]
-Niseishi
-Matsumura no Passai
-Gekisai Dai Ichi
-Gekisai Dai Ni
