- Great movie, the story is a bit exagerated in comparison to Sosai Oyama's life, but it has a lot of true aspects of his life. Long live Kyokushin!
- THE ACTING IS POOR. THE PLOT IS SILLY AND RIDICULOUS. It is stated in the movie that the American soldiers that liberated southeast asia from Japanese tyranny in world war two were more evil than the Japanese army that conquered and subdued south east asia in world war two. This movie is offensive to me personally as an american. It depicts US SOLDIERS as rapists and evil murderers. Three of my uncles fought in the pacific in world war two. The directors of this movie can go fly a kite! I tossed the dvd in the garbge.
- absolutely amazing movie. A few parts are exaggerated like the flying kicks, hah, however that's only part I didn't like. the movie was over all fantastic.
- Spectacular.
A full fleshed martial arts movie.
A journey into someone's vision of a summary opf the life of an actual historical martial artist.
Never trained in kyokushin but I heard they trained full contact and I was impressed.
I saw this on redsun dvd and the short summary looked pretty intriguing.
It was well worth the purchase.
Especially the parts when Baedal was traveling around fighting and defeating the different stylists.
And I am not sure but I think one of the guys was a ninjutsu student even though he was not labeled as such.
The techniques resembled those of the Bunjinkan/Genbukan seminars I viewed on video.
The plotline is classic but touching.
A man who gets stronger from adversity.
And goes on to become a martial arts legend.
Wonderful and a must own for any martial arts student.
As far as the guy who rated the film low due to its portrayal of American soldiers.
You are entitled to your opinion. this is a Korean made film and one person's
vision of certain things. To low rate it because of that minor plot point is a bit
small minded, yes.
I digress.....
I use this film as inspiration when my depression sets in.
It helps me to maintain my own training.
Better than drugs and clinical psychotherapy.
- This movie traces the life of Choi Baedal, a Korean who learns to prove himself in the martial arts world of post-WWII Japan. Loosely based on the life of Mas Oyama (Sosai), founder of Kyokushin Karate, it is an enjoyable watch, especially for those who practice Kyokushin. It is not, however, all fighting and training. A fair amount of the film focuses on Baedal's life before training in the mountains, including a love interest.
The movie is in both Korean and Japanese. English subtitles are available. The only downside is that in the options submenu, the languages are not labeled in in English, so I have to fish around to see which of the five subtitled languages is English (I think it's the third).
On the whole a good movie.

- I am a Black Belt in Kyokushin, and was a student of Mas Oyama in Japan. I wish one day Japanese movie production would make a TRUE BIOGRAPHY Film about Mas Oyama. Not Fiction movie like this one, may be 10% based on true Mas Oyama's life. He deserve to have a better, REAL biography film. The korean film "Fighter in the Wind" is another one that I did not like since it is not an accurate biography. It has too much of a prejudice view by the Koreans. Mas Oyama only konws the true story.....It is BEST to read a book written by Mas Oyama himself, rather than watching fiction entertaiment movies. OSU~!
- Was wrong DVD I received at the beggining than after contacting and sending back the wrong DVD received the correct one.
Satisfy service.
Thanks
- What starts off as a pretty good movie turns ridiculous. It is sad because it didn't have to. You will notice with these Sonny Chiba movies that they are not super low budget like most chinese and taiwanese kung fu films. The fights are all good but the bear fight was just horrible. They had like a weird robot and then a guy in a bear suit for some the time. I want to know why they didn't actually at least show a real bear. It was unbearable!
This movie is kind of the same as bull fighter and has most of the same actors. But all Chiba films do that. So again he is an outkast and nobody would ever except his challenge because their dojos are for respectable karate masters. So he ends up showing off again, at least in evreybody's eyes. So again all the fights are good but I don't think that when a bear dies he keeps getting up and falling down.
The DVD picture quality is really good but does have some horizantal lines during the movie. Not very noticeable overall though. Sound is also very good. And remember that when fighting a bear you have to use that special move of jumping over him and kicking him.
Also look out for a cameo in the credits by the real Mas Oyamo that Chiba is portraying in this trilogy.
- It's funny how movie trailers can really throw off a film. If you ever seen karate bearfighter movie trailer, you will think it is a lame movie. In conclusion, it is probably the best oyama trilogy film i have ever seen.
The fight scenes in this feature is incredible. Sonny chiba fights some of the most top fighters in this film. The action fights are well directed. The backdrops in this film is spectacular. I have to always commend on sonny chiba's acting abilities. Sonny really shows the audience true emotion besides fighting.
If you have not seen this film, and dont know what it is about let me share a little note on what this film summerizes. As you know,if you have been keeping up with the series of oyama, then you know that he has a history of beating karate fighters up, and also luckly beating a live bull. The story basically kicks off when oyama decides to give up karate, and become a bouncer for a old time buddy. When things went sour, he quits and flees to the county side where he gets involved in a boys abbusive life stlye.Due to unfortunate circumstances, the young boys father gets hurt bad on the job, and has no mediacal insurance. Oyama is asked by some underground thugs to fight a live bear. If oyama wins, he receives big money and can use that money to pay the medical bill.
When oyama succesfully beats the bear, he is then given an invitation to fight a karate fighter seeking revenge on him. The karate figher's brother however was paralyze by oyama in a fight before he fleed to the country.
The last fight is kind of short but it is good. I recomend you get this film. If you have not seen or ever watched the oyama trilogy, by all means check this one out. Also, the picture quality put out by adness is top notch. Great widescreen remastering.
- Well worth your money, very entertaining. Not only will you see a man take down a bear, he will also take down a crazy American GI.

- This video is based in the Kyokushinkai enciclopedia of Matsui, from IKO1, and it has a few videos of kumite, championships and Mas Oyama 50's bullfight and training (about 5 minutes).
Not Recomended.

- This is a great movie on the life of the greatest Karate master who ever lived, Mas. Oyama. Oyama created the powerful "Kyokushin" style of Karate in the 1950's and it is popular around the world today as a real fighting Karate style. Sonny Chiba(who was a real life student of Oyama) really did a great job portraying his mentor in this entire triology series. The other two films are "Karate Bearfighter" and "Karate For Life", also available here at Amazon. Highly recommended!
- I was so dissapointed with these ridiculous films (series) made by a Japanese large famous movie studio TOEI. I am a Japanese, and I have black belt in Kyokushin. I was a Oyama's student. So, I bought these movie series, and watched them. What a cheap crap movies~! if you really want to see Mas Oyama's Karate, buy one from Media 8. Do not wast time and money on these movies. OSU~!

- Very good display of Kata, including showing an above view, would recommend to anyone starting out.
My only reason for dropping a star would be the sound quality, the drumming was at sometimes quite annoying
- On this spectacular DVD you will learn Japan's most rugged full contact Karate style! It includes the complete system of Kyokushinkai knock out karate, which means the style of Ultimate Truth. You will learn warm ups, basic, kata & Kumite-sparring. Includes the kata Taikyoku I, II, III, Unique KIcking kata, Yantau, Pinan IV, Seipai, Saiha, Tensho, Sanchin, Kanku and Seiunchin. Includes the complete system of sparring and how to knock your opponent out with one powerful blow & much more! 90 minutes.
- please NOTE: this is transferred from a very old vhs video and is entirely in japanese, with no english subtitles or language options, and the quality of the dvd is fragile and worn with fading colour and "jumpy" picture(understandable though having been transferred from vhs). the drumming in the background continues throughout the entire video too and can be abit annoying because the sound of the instructions are drowned out (not that i understand japanese language anyway) from the drumming. the sound quality is fairly poor as well with constant buzzing (like what you'd hear from a very old vhs video cassette).
other than these initial problems, i found the different angles of the views of karate demonstration to be helpful. and they slow it right down and break down the movements to show you what to do. there is a 3D character to show where some of the strikes are to be thrown, which is also helpful. i found that alot of what had been shown in the classroom during the dvd resembles a great deal what my own class teaches. its a genuine dvd but unless you speak fluent japanese and dont mind the slightly poor quality of the dvd (plus constant drumming), i would probably recommend that you continue your search for another kyokushin karate instruction dvd. although having said that, you would still get alot out of learning from this dvd.

4 comments about Sonny Chiba - Masutatsu Oyama Trilogy.
- This is a great set for Chiba fans. You can tell they put some love into it with great picture and sound. All are in widescreen and subtitled with an option for simulated 5.1 sound. For those who haven't seen these movies before it's sort of a Karate action drama based on Chiba's mentor. They're the original uncut versions so there shouldn't be anything missing. Extras are limited to trailers. I'm no expert on widescreen, color saturation or sound so purists may have another opinion. I personally love this set.
- I am a practitoner of Grand Master Mas Oyama's Kyokushin Karate for over 30 years now. Kyokushin is Japan's strongest and No. 1 style of Karate, very different from the other styles. I remember when the first movie in this triology "Kenka Karate Kyokushin Ken" was released to U.S. movie theaters under the title "Champion Of Death". Starring Japan action star Sonny Chiba, it was a big hit, particularly in drive-in movie theaters in the late 70's. I remember writing a movie review of this film when it played in my own hometown so many years ago. Later, this movie was shown on THE MOVIE CHANNEL and I had it recorded, being the only one around who had a dubbed English language copy of this movie. Eventually, "Champion Of Death" was released on video by a second rate video distribution company. My copy from TV was superior in quality to what was released, even clearer than the dvd that was later released. Now, we have the "Sonny Chiba - Masutatsu Oyama Trilogy" officially released, remastered, in wide screen format, containing all three movies in this series uncut in the original Japanese language with removable English subtitles. A dream come true and so affordable for a 3 disk boxset. I'm sure this movie trilogy was done justice because of the recent interest in action star Sonny Chiba since his appearance in the movie hit "Kill Bill Vol. One". But, whatever the reason, all Kyokushin students should grab this set while it's still available. True, it may be loosely based on Mas Oyama's life story, but it still worth owning as part of your martial arts movie collection. The third movie "Karate For Life" contains the best on screen Karate action in Sonny Chiba's entire career. I highly recommend this exciting dvd boxset. OSU!
- This boxset of films chronicling Oyama's trials and tribulations has more in common with the The Sister Street Fighter Collection set (also released by BCI) in that the packaging is well thought out-three discs in slim plastic cases with original poster art on the inlay on their interiors. However, the first two films-Karate Bull Fighter and Karate Bear Fighter are some identical that it becomes tedious; Oyama challenges a school, get's banished, flees to the country-side, kills an animal, and returns to kill his enemies. Karate Bull Fighter outshines Karate Bear Fighter in that the bull is real versus the hilarious man in bear suit featured in the later. The jewel in the crown is Karate For Life in which Oyama finds himself in occupied Okinawa fighting American wrestlers and takes up shelter with a rag tag lot of Okinawan youth. All three films are not as action-packed as The Street Fighter series; all involve some melodramatic love and death side stories, the same villain appears in all three films, and kids in particular spew repetitive line such a "Ojiisan" over and over (as seen in Karate For Life). All in all, this set is better than the Sonny Chiba Collectionand the The Executioner/The Executioner II: Karate Inferno double pack.
- This "Trilogy" is actually a rather loosely-connected series of films that happen to have the same leading character (Mas Oyama).I really believe they are not particularly well done. I didn't get any sense of an attempt to explore the character of Oyama Sensei. The Karate sequences were nothing special and I was not made aware of what, if anything but raw strength, distinguished his style from that of any of the other characters represented in the film. If someone were a true Sonny Chiba fan then the films should be in their collection. Otherwise, see if you can rent them or borrow them from a fellow fan.
