  1. This DVD, authorized by the Bruce Lee estate, claims to be a training film on Jeet Kune Do. It shows old footage of Bruce Lee, in rare home movies and his films, and tries to use these clips to discuss his art Jeet Kune Do. The very serious person, who wants to either learn or research this art, will move on to much better things. This DVD, only scartches the service, and one is better off reading books by Bruce (Toa of Jeet Kune Do) or Jerry Beasley, if he or she cannot take lessons.

Danny Inosanto is interviewed and demonstrates some concepts, but the direction and production lacks any real coherence as it shoots between Bruce Lee footage and Inosanto. It mixes Bruce's voice with another voice which sounds similar to Bruce's (sounds very close, but speaks of Bruce in the third person) and this interaction is a little distracting.

It should probably be only two stars, but sentimentally, I gave it three, because Bruce Lee fans will probably want to collect rare footage not seen anywhere else.

  2. This DVD will NOT teach you JKD. If you are already Familiar with it, then it is VERY helpful. I have been studying Jeet Kune Do for about 2 years now, only under Bruce Lee's original style and schooling. You must understand what JKD revolves around. Tao. The way. It doesn't matter how strong your axe kick is, because if I truely know the Tao about any martial art, my effectivity will be much better. Watching Bruce Lee's form is very helpful to realize how JKD looks in fluid movements and in combat situations. However, if you want to learn a martial art, I defenietly suggest buying the Tao of Jeet Kune Do, and after that move on to books on form, then finally go to perfecting motion, etc.

  3. Given that the footage of Bruce Lee is so limited, as it seems is the budget of this production, I found this disc pretty enjoyable. The footage is very raw, but Bruce Lee's incredible energy still comes through. As a training video, it is good at teaching the concepts and philosophy behind Jeet Kune Do. A few basics are taught. There is footage of Lee teaching James Coburn with Lee analyzing the film. This to me is new, so I found it pretty interesting. The footage of his interview with Pierre Barton is amazing as always, though the picture quality is not as good as found on the Enter The Dragon bonus side

I believe the one reviewer is wrong in saying part of the narration is done by a Bruce Lee soundalike. Lee is reading from an article written about him. That is why he refers to himself in third person. The same audio is found on the Enter The Dragon bonus, but here there is more of it.

Overall I enjoyed it as I love to listen to Bruce Lee's philosophies as much as seeing his action in movies.

  4. If you want some footage of Mr. Lee, go ahead & buy this. Otherwise, I can't recommend it.

  1. I really do wish I could rate this movie higher. I have great respect for the Dog Brothers, and Mr. Richardson's JKDU has some outstanding programs. Unfortunately, it really doesn't live up to the promise for me. I primarily bought this DVD because of the endorsement of Dan Inosanto, that it was movie with "realistic fight scenes." The feel-good factor is high, the production values are low, and the fight scenes... well, they aren't necessarily choreographed, but that's not the same as being REALISTIC. Realistic fights in the slums of Manila involve knives and people bleeding out in about five seconds, not wrestling and muay Thai kicks.

That being said, this is as well produced as most of movies coming out of Asia, doesn't need voice-overs or subtitles, and is a fun family film.

5 comments about Biography - Bruce Lee: The Immortal Dragon (A&E DVD Archives).
  1. If someone told me "Bruce Lee was a philosopher" a few years ago, I would have laughed out loud.
I've loved Bruce Lee as Martial Arts expert/performer/action_movie-pioneer for years and years, but the stuff I read about Bruce Lee's philosophy and ideas in general was always muddy, oddly put together, and or tough to read.
This bio is concise, informative, and not repetitive the way a lot of early A&E Biographies were. And of course, the best thing about this DVD, is that you see and understand that Bruce Lee was more than a physical phenom that moved (more than anyone I've ever seen) in what could be posted in wikipedia as "Poetry in Motion."

  2. Bruce Lee: The Immortal Dragon is great DVD! this video explains the history and biography of the greatest Martial artists of all time, Bruce lee! This documentary video gives you insight on how Bruce Lee became famous! This video has rear clips and video of Bruce lee performing his amazing martial arts demonstration on film and television. It has interviews with Bruce Lee's family and friends including his late son, Brandon Lee. I recommend it.

  3. I really liked this biography since I am a big Bruce Lee fan but the only this is that I found it to be very short. I would still recommend to any Bruce lee fans out there.

  4. The Biography - Bruce Lee: The Immortal Dragon(A&E)
is awesome! It tells about Bruce Lee's life and about his fighting skills.
I'am female fan of Bruce Lee 'til now....I still doing his fighting method; to defend myself from bad people.

  5. This is the Biography to have. For me, Bruce Lee is and always has been the most inspirational person in my life. Setting goals and making the personal effort (and sacrifices) to achieve them is a hallmark of Master Lee. As the years go by (today's my 51st birthday), I still look at Bruce and see new things. I couldn't have discovered a better role model for my life. I constantly refine my understanding of Bruce and see things in him today that even I had somehow overlooked before. I never thought this possible, but I'm still discovering the genious of this individual. Great Bio - superb human being... Robert, I'm still waiting for your film on the "real" brother beyond "Dragon..."

  1. A long time ago, I purchased Steve Grody's JKD Trapping Hand series on VHS tape. Since then, I've loaned them out to friends, and eventually lost them. This is the same series he did back in the early 90's, but now its on DVD. This is absolutely excellent material, and I still refer to it. Hopefully the other video series' he's done will be coming out on DVD soon as well!

For those who aren't familiar with this, he had a 4 volume series on JKD trapping. This is Volume 1 in that series. The entire series goes through the various traps that are used by Wing Chun, but within the context of the JKD curriculum.

  1. This DVD looks to be the same show that A&E aired as their biography of Bruce Lee (1 hour version). The quality of the transfer is good - both picture and sound - but not great.

Two things that annoyed me are:
    1) Several motion clips and stills were used over and over, detracting from the generally good quality of the production and
    2) The "extras" consist solely of several trailers for martial arts movies, some of which Bruce Lee had nothing to do with.

Still, for ten bucks, it's a good deal.

  2. I saw this episode of Biography under the new title "Bruce Lee - Immortal Dragon" on a low-priced DVD. While it doesn't go into enormous detail and is relatively short, it is still a pretty entertaining and complete version of Bruce Lee's life. I would reccommend it mostly to aspiring fans of Lee. One part of the documentary that I liked was a nifty section on the many Bruce Lee imitators that came after Lee's death. Like most documentaries found in the bargain bin, the film clips are mostly from public domain sources.
As an extra feature, the DVD contains trailers for Bruce Lee's "The Chinese Connection," "Fists of Fury," "Enter the Dragon," and "Return of the Dragon," as well as trailers for Jackie Chan's "The Big Brawl," Steven Seagal's "Above the Law," and Chuck Norris' "The Octagon" and "A Force of One." All of these trailers are pretty entertaining. The biggest shortcoming of the DVD is that it contains no chapter stops - this is a source of frustration.

  3. I picked this up very very cheap in a supermarket, and I know why now.
The main part of the DVD is a documentary which is quite interesting but really has nothing new to say about Bruce Lee. It contains a lot of stock footage which I have seen before.

For what I paid (£1 in the UK!), and baring in mind I actually don't own any other Bruce Lee documentaries, this is fine. If it costs more than that and you already have documentaries about Bruce Lee its probably not worth buying.

  4. Bruce Lee - Immortal Dragon

Great documentary about this Great Man. Mister Lee still the Best for ever !

1 comments about Barry Cuda Dynamic Kali #1 Knife Fighting DVD filipino martial arts.
  1. A very fine video on kali knife techniques from guro Cuda. The video covers basics, single knife, double knife, and empty-hand versus the knife. Guro Cuda demonstrates many different training drills, and there's enough depth here to interest advanced as well as beginning students. There are some very cool combos also, which include follow-up takedowns to the ground with ground pins and locks as well.

In some ways the approach is similar to the late, great Remy Presas who was quite skilled with holds and locks in addition to the knife and stick techniques, and often demonstrates that in his videos. (I read once that master Presas was said to have been a champion dumog wrestler in his youth). Everyone is into ground techniques these days what with the success of Brazilian jujitsu and there's even a bit of that here. After seeing this video I'm definitely interested in buying his other videos. I've seen many Filipino and Indonesian knife and stick videos over the years and this is up there with the best of them.

And finally, there's some great action footage at the beginning of the video showing guro Cuda and his student doing some of the drills and combos at full speed in the street.

I have to say that many years ago (about 25) I had the privilege of meeting guro Presas, and demonstrating some chin na techniques and escapes with my Chinese tai chi and kung fu master, and guro Presas was very impressed with our demo. It was a great honor to meet guro Presas and to demonstrate with him.

  1. Once again George has done an outstanding job on this version to say the least! This Edition is a revised version which still carrys his fire, passion , and enthusiasm for Jeet Kune Do!! He has also made it easy to follow along with professional quality DVD's for anyone to follow to increase their knowledge and skill of JKD'! Great job on a job well done!! Larry Milam

  2. As a female practioner of JKD for the past three years, I have found this set of instructional DVD's to be of the utmost quality. Mr. Hajnasr's detailed, step-by-step instruction has helped me to develop a deeper understanding of the original art of Jeet Kune Do. I highly recommend this set for the excellent quality and extensive knowledge Mr. Hajnasr demonstrates. His passion for the art is contagious.

  3. Like many people I reviewed the many favorable reviews with a certain skepticism. But upon reviewing the DVD I know why it received such favorable ratings. It a very complete representation of JKD. Which is what I wanted an overview of the many facets of JKD. I'm now taking classes but our instuctor is jumping around on so many different aspects that its tough to learn. I wanted some supplemental instruction and have received it in these DVD's. Dont be afraid to purchase if you want a good overall view of JKD. However if your really interested in becoming good at JKD you should take classes from a qualified instructor also.

  4. this guy is a master and you will want this dvd because it's easy to follow and his teachings is that clear so i recommend this to all beginners and intermediates.

  5. First of all I am a former Marine who is currently a student of Shun Hsin Dao (Heart, Mind, and Body's Way). This form of self defense was developed by my instructor who is the founder. He is also a former Marine who served in Vietnam as a sniper and is highy skilled in several types of self-defense including a black belt in Karate and weapons training which implements many Jeet Kune Do principles as well as his own. Yet my instructor's teachings are far more advanced than the instructor's teachings on his video by far. Such as, how to properly take the effectiveness out of a side kick and how certain hits will affect the internal organs in such a way that death is a probability. My personal feelings is that George Hajnasr's video is a marketing tool for his school and it shows he is full of himself. His techniques and teaching are repititous such as that of Karate. Anyone highly skilled will know that the body will not remain in the same position after being struck. Therefore, repititous drills are a waste of time. Bruce Lee planted a seed such as, "The attacker always gives himself away". In George's video he mainly demonstrates his skills as an attack and not as a "Good defense is the best offense" He lacks explanation in his demonstrations except for the Chinese names of certain techniques he managed to memorize so he could show off. There is no explanation about awareness, sensitivity, or forward progression following a block. I personally could counter several of George's attacks with my level of skill that would be quite damaging physically. There are many unwise techniques taught by George that invites very damaging counters. George also used a segment of this video to show off his 7 year old son which was a bunch of BS. This was not instructional at all. Another thing is that his movement in showing techniques is not that of instructor who is trying to teach. Many of his movements were so quick you have to make sure to press slow play to view his technique. Once viewed there are so many flaws that I am confident my training is far more advanced than his students. I personally hated how much time George wasted on his music videos showing techniques or drills in motion throughout the video. Now another thing is his instruction on taking an opponent to the ground is ridiculous. You may be able to pull these techniques on a drunk or someone who is physically dominated by your power but I do not recommend these. If you go to the ground with your opponent you are defenseless to attacks from bystanders who may be in defense of the opponent. Therefore, you should never go to the ground and if so you should do whatever it takes to get back to your feet such as biting, scratching, breaking fingers, gouging eyes, etc.... My instructor has written a book which is available on line which tells of his own background, concepts and training in regard to self defense. I assure you this book is a must which will definitely give anyone studying Jeet Kune Do a different point of view and will definitely take their level of skill to a more advanced level. The name of the book is Natural Martial Arts by Thomas Purtell. I am located in Tucson, AZ and if anyone is interested in contacting my instructor please feel free to contact me at spadude17@yahoo.com and I will forward your email to him.
