5 comments about Goju Ryu Karate Kata (Tsunami).
- As Taikyoku kata has never formed part of Goju Ryu, it is not surprising to find it absent from a program dedicated to Goju Ryu karate that is presented by its greatest living exponent.
The reviewer also needs help with his English!
- Wonderfull to see Higaonna. A pitty that nothing is done with the new medium DVD. There are no chapters. Just have to find the katas in the old fasion way by scrolling for- en backwards.
- Goju is one of my foundational styles with Kyokushinkai. This is an opportunity for you to see the master at work. Excellent form and execution a must have. Now you can compare your form to the highest authority today. But like everyone else I have problems in finding exactly what I want when I want it. It would also be nice if it had multiple angles but that would make this way to long. It shows all 12 katas of Goju. This DVD was probably a reproduction of a video tape and hopefully in the future they will update thier efforts.
However, don't let that detract from you watching this DVD, you don't have to be a Goju stylist to enjoy this video. This is a historical video in that you get to see the highest authority in Goju today when he was still working his way up.
- SENSEI HIGAONA ACCOMPLISHED A GREAT SERVICE BY PRODUCING THIS INSTRUCTIONAL CD FOR GOJU- AND ALL MARTIAL ARTS PRACTICIONERS.
- Even though I am most familiar with the Shotokan Karate style, I have an interest in numerous traditional karate systems such as Goju Ryu. Even though I practiced all the Shotokan Karate katas, I wanted to learn some Goju katas. This excellent DVD, along with some other Karate DVDs by Morio Higaonna has helped me to learn a little about Goju Ryu Karate. This volume does not go into great length on the details of performing each kata, but it is a great summary guide to the katas for those who are actively studying Goju Ryu under an instructor. The katas covered in this volume include: Sanchin, Gekisai Dai Ichi, Gekisai Dai Ni, Saifa, Seiyunchin, Shisochin, Sanseru, Seipai, Kururunfa, Sesan, Suparinpei, and Tensho. In conclusion, this is a must DVD for anyone interested in Goju Ryu katas. Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Shotokan Karate Self-Defense Techniques: Combat karate for the street, Tanto-Jutsu official manual, Wakizashi-Jutsu Manual, Monadnock Defensive Tactics System, Use of the Monadnock Straight Baton, PR-24 Police Baton Advanced Techniques, Martial Art Myths, Never Trust a Politician).

2 comments about Goju Ryu Karate Technical Series 4 - Ad. Kata (Tsunami) [VHS].
- I purchased this video expecting full, detailed descriptions of the addressed kata, including the history of each of the kata and subtleties of its performance. I was sadly disappointed. The video does provide a presentation of the indicated kata from different camera angles and in slow motion. However, there is virtually no narration and bunkai demonstrations are very limited. My recommendation: don't waste your money on this video (I don't know about the other videos in the series), rather, buy Higaonna's "Kata" video as it shows all the Goju-Ryu kata and related bunkai - it is one of my favorites!
- I agree completely that Higaonna's "Kata" video is a good choice for the absolute beginner, particularly kids. However, if you've been training for three months or more and are serious about learning karate, you need to at least start thinking about buying "master class" level videos like this.
The production quality of all the videos in this series is superb, it goes without saying that with an instructor of this caliber the karate is unbelievable, and the multi camera studio footage and excellent slow motion shows everything. As any experienced karate man will tell you, if you don't understand by watching, an explanation is not going to help you. This American produced video is part of a series (Goju Ryu Technical Series) that is a best seller in Japan where it is distributed by the media department of the Japan Karate Federation. Enough said!

- Awesome display of Technical and historic knowledge. Traditional yet very practical training approach covering both aspects of Goju: Physical Training (Undo) and Technical fighting and self-defense skills (bunkai e kumite kihon). Highly recommended for the serious Goju Ryu exponent. Osu!

- As practicing Goju Ryu karate practitioners, my husband and I found these DVD's an invaluable source of reference. Sensei Higaonna presents the various strengths and applications of the style in an easy to follow progression. Anyone practicing karate or wishing to learn more about this interesting form of martial art should consider seriously getting hold of this series. Highly recommended.

- This video serries is a must for any student of martial arts. It is a very technical and a 100% accurate training video made by a master martial artist. This is the form I studied for several years and I can atest to the accuracy of the forms it depicts. There is no holywood board breaking or wana-be ninja stunts in this video serries... It is all solid feet on the floor mind intensive training. For those who do not know it, this is the form of Karate chosen by the USMC many years ago (when I was in) and is considered by those who actualy fight to survive, as the best (not Brazillian judo, or tangsudo or jeet kun do). for one on one submission/grapling there are better forms; but to be a police officer or foot soldier I have never seen better. It's roots are legendary, and the video serries covers some of the history as well as the forms. I've looked for schools to teach it where I live now, but they only have Mc-Karate and Mc-taekwando. Don't waste your money on those schools. You will learn more in 1 hour from this video than you will get in a year of karate at the local clown karate school. I know because I paid $1,100 to prove it!

- If you truely like classical Karate, if you want a true insight to where it all came from and you want to learn about multiple styles - you just hit the gong. I have both volumes of this in VHS. I will get both in DVD.
There is some very good information and outstanding instruction from some devasting Kyoshi's & Hanshi's. The production quality shames Yamazato & Rising Sun Production Co. and eclipses Tsunami (whom I consider to be of above all the rest). You will not be wasting your money. View and enjoy
- As someone who has practiced martial arts off and on for over a quarter of a century, I have seen most of the videos that there are to see. I have heard of these videos for years, but only now had the ability to purchase them. For those who are interested in traditional martial arts and especially Okinawan karate, these videos are a gold mine of information. All aspects of karate are covered, including basics (kihon), solo forms (kata), sparring (kumite), and various types of conditioning, some of which need to be seen to be believed. The primary demonstrators are Kiyohide Shinjo and the recently deceased Seiko Toyama of Uechi ryu, Tetsuhiro Hokama and Shigetoshi Senaha of goju ryu, and Yoshimitsu Onaga of shorin ryu, along with several others. There is also a short section dedicated to the karate training used by the Japan Self Defense Forces at the end of Vol. 1. These are not instructional videos, but rather demonstrations of some mid to high level aspects of the arts. The advertising for these videos suggests that the information contained would be most useful for those practitioners second dan black belt and up, and I would agree with that. I highly recommend these videos for anyone interested in real martial arts; my only complaint is that I wish there were more of them.
