  1. I'd been looking for a good, durable jump rope so my daughters could have more things to play outdoors when I came across these. They used to have these in my elementary gym classes and I loved them. They're sturdy, colorful and when you swing them they keep a better shape. I've already bought several of them. I would recommend also getting a book on jump rope rhymes. We have Anna Banana. They get exercise, fresh air, and wholesome fun. Who could ask for more?

  1. This was a good buy at $29.95 the gloves feel good to both me and my son, and I have a extra large hands, good quality, plus a jump rope and wraps.

  2. Arrived after 6 days of the purchase (including one weekend) even with the supersaving.

The kit is just the one that I need. I use to practice Box in Mexico for a while and when I came here and saw this item I decided to return to the practice and is even better than the one that I used to use in Mexico.

  1. As someone who jumps rope regularly, this rope is the best of any I've tried. I've purchased more expensive ropes and cheaper ropes. This rope is faster than any rope I've used, it has very few parts to break down, and the length of the handles helps with doubles, triples, cross-overs, etcetera. Before finding these available on Amazon--which is so much easier--I went to great lengths to find these ropes specifically.
You may not think you need a fast rope, but if you are interested in maximizing your aerobic workout, speed is key. If you are interested in the plyometric applications of jumping rope, speed is also key. In other words, you need speed in a rope and this has it. You won't be disappointed!

  2. Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1L8XJSXEB0MYQ Update August 26, 2008 - There's another rope that's better, cheaper, and ships more cheaply and more quickly.

    http://www.buyjumpropes.net/product_p/018.htm

On this rope, the clip that adjusts the rope length and secures the rope in the handle is plastic so it doesn't corrode and is easy to adjust -just don't get it too short. In the Buddy Lee rope the metal clip often wears through the handle leaving the handle useless. The rope goes into a recessed hole, so the plastic that bears the pressure of the rope is not just a thin layer of plastic and there is no metal-to-plastic contact. I'll be doing a video to illustrate all this.

I have no relationship with Matt Hopkins although I have spoken to him on the phone about his site and about this rope and the fact I was planning to review it - and the objective reasons why.
    ----------------
Update: Video and text on rope adjustment, maintenance - http://www.questforendorphins.com/jumpropemaint.aspx

It occured to me after making the video that the weight of the rope can make all the difference in learning. I was lucky that I started on this rope, because after reviewing two other supposed "speed" ropes, I doubt I would have persisted long enough to learn because they were so heavy.

You may think that a heavy rope is a good idea for a harder workout and it will build the upper body faster. That may be true, but for a harder workout, just spin the rope faster - jumping, in my opinion, should be about quickness and agility. If you want to build the upper body, add resistance training. I'm not sure it's a good idea to ramp up the g-forces pulling on your arms for a continuous period of time anyway. For a light upper body workout, try Heavy Hula Hands as demonstrated on my web site.

As far as the actual weight difference: this rope weighs 98 grams (3.45 oz). One of the other two almost identical ropes I reviewed weighs 208 grams (7.4 oz). So not only is it twice as heavy, but depending on how much of the weight is in the cord (seems like most), it will increase in apparent weight over twice as fast when you spin it, causing unnecessary pull on the arms. It's also going to hurt when it hits you, and near misses become actual misses because the rope is thicker - meaning it will hit you and hurt you more often. It will also collapse at lower speeds, meaning even more misses.

I started on this rope because in about 2002 I read an article in Business Week about Buddy Lee that got me started. That's weird in two ways.

    (1) I never read Business Week except after visiting my father and being exposed endlessely to cable business news - it makes me want to be a grown-up too.
    (2) It's Business Week, what are the odds I'd read an article on sports equipment?

Anyway, I ordered the rope from his site and that's what I learned on.

All the details on maintenance, adjusting length, and everything else I can show you about this rope will soon be available on my site. I'm not going to waste any more time and money reviewing other ropes when the only way I know to improve this one would be to make it indestructible.

Speaking of which. You may want to buy just one at first, but if you find you like it, go ahead and buy another one or two. I hit the cord on my rope on something real sharply near the cd player just yeaterday, and it broke immediately after that. Fortunately I always have a second rope ready to go.

When I was discussing cost and said in the video that 'ropes' were $5.00, I meant replacement cords were $5.00. "Buddy Lee Jump Ropes" will also send you more little brass connector thingies free if you need them. Regardless of all that, this rope would have to be $30.00 before I'd start trying to find a replacement.

This rope is supposed to be good for heights up to 6 ft. 5 in., but for any height over 6'2" I'd consider a rope with 6" more length, Magic Speed Jump Rope. As far as I can tell, it's identical except the cord is 9'6" rather than 9' long and it comes with a video that I'm not familiar with.

  3. The rotation and length adjustment is great, but the rope itself gets pretty beat up on the pavement. Might be best used in a gym.

  1. This jump rope was perfect for my kids. The wanted a rope for double dutch and this one works perfectly.

  2. Bought this as a double dutch jump rope. It's very hard to use the plastic cased jump rope. Would recommend an actual "rope" jump rope.

  3. My 11-yr old is getting into doing "Double Dutch" jump-roping with her friends. Loves it. Rec'd product in just a few days - Bueno.

  4. just incredible. the shipping was fast, the jumpropes are durable, work perfect, and it was dirt cheap!

  1. Great rope. I gave it 4 stars as I have not tried every rope out there, but this one is fast and a joy to use. The longer handles with the foam padding are comfortable. As the instructions go slow when you are cutting the rope down to size. I took a half inch off at a time the first few uses to make sure I did not go to short. I still have a few more inches to get rid of for a perfect fit.

  2. For performance, this rope is 5/5 - jump rope is lot easier and the long handles take a lot of strain off the shoulders/back muscles. Unfortunately the construction of the rope is poor, the plastic handles break easily - mine cracked at the bearing end just from casual indoor use. I never dropeed the rope or treated it badly and from normal use the handles broke, bearings came out and now the rope is useless.

I will be purchasing the Aero Speed - as I loved the design of Buddy Lee's ropes, and this one has aluminium handles so hopefully they wont crack and break!

  3. The swivel bearing is the best feature of this rope. You can tell that it spins faster and easier than other ropes. If you're used to a leather rope, it may seem a little lightweight at first. I've also read reviews that criticize the plastic "rope" for wearing down quickly, which I think it would do if you were jumping on concrete. If you jump on padded or wood floors there will be adequate rope life. Also, the rope takes a while to lose its "memory" from being in the box, but after you hang it over a door or something for a few days it's fine. The shipping cost almost prevented me from buying it, but I had a gift certificate so I talked myself into it.

  4. This rope is great for jumping however, as others have mentioned, the rope has a weak spot right at the bearing insert point.

I will buy the aluminum version as the performance in general is outstanding.

  5. When I first started using this rope I was blown away by how much cleaner and faster the rope turned than the others I had tried. But unfortunately, the plastic broke right at the insert between the rope screw and handle after only a month of casual use. I returned the rope for a new one, which broke in the same way after only two trips to the gym. The problem is that the rope starts to unscrew itself from the handle, which puts tremendous shearing force on the weakest part of the plastic handle as you rotate it up and down. I read something about applying a thread lock, which may be a solution. I can't believe such an expensive rope from the great Buddy Lee has such a fatal flaw.

  1. The chinese jump rope arrived and we had no idea how to use it. I assumed it would come with some basic directions. So buy it if you know how to use it or you will need to buy a separate book as we need to now.

  2. Great product and prompt delivery. These work great for gym classes of all ages!

  3. I ordered 5 of these for my sons cub scout pack. They are very durable and the boys (ages 6-9) couldn't get enough of it. The only down side is that you need to find directions for the game on the internet because the ropes didn't come with any. Really happy with this purchase.

  4. GAme I played as a kid and now teaching kids in class how to play. The ropes make the grade.

  1. Used the jump rope maybe 3-4 times and the handle broke off, you would expect a quality jump rope for the price but don't count on it. Then again it could have just been mine.

  2. with ball bearings in the wooden handles, and a real leather "rope" this is a perfect exercise jump rope. I am 5'10" and the 9.5 footer is the correct length for me. I would not get the shorter rope unless you are 5'6 or shorter in height.

  1. I thought from the reviews this would be fairly sturdy rope, it wasn't, it was pretty limp. For the price I suppose i got what I paid for.

  2. I was not pleased with this product. The rope isn't heavy enough to swing easily, it gets tangled very easily.

  3. I bought this jump rope because I figured there couldn't be that much difference in basic models. I mean it's a rope between to handles! Sadly I was mistaken, like previous reviews, the rope is limp and hardly makes it around more than a few times before it trips you up. Save your bucks and spend a few more bucks to get a good rope.
