  1. They are excellent for sparring and let both people know when you make a hit without leaving a mark. They have a good weight and feel. Could do without the dragon inked on them in gold, but it is already beginning to wear off with use.

  2. These sticks are great for training, but not as good as they could be.
The issue is the PVC pipe they use as a core. It should be stronger.
Several times we had to replace the core with PVC tubing we got at the
    local hardware store.
I found that if you take the gray PVC pipes used for watering systems,
you will have a much more useful stick. With that, you can hit as hard as you want
and not break the sticks, and you can do disarming, as well as stick assisted control holds.
With the core it comes with, the tube bends, and breaks with any real force is placed on
    the stick.
If you are tapping lightly, and not doing disarming, then these are perfect. I like the
replacement cores we put in, to still train safely, but allow us to do more advanced
    techniques.

  1. So far my kids have had good luck with this product in Tae Kwon Do. I would buy these again.

  2. They are good for practice. They are not hardened, so they take a bit of abuse if you practice with others that have hardened sticks.

  3. These are NOT made of rattan. They are oak or something hard and heavy, which is good for swinging around by yourself, but if you're sparring you need them to actually be made of rattan, that way you don't break the other person's stick. Rattan is also more flexible, so when it takes abuse it just tends to bend and not splinter into pieces.

If you are going to spar, or hit sticks together in any way, look somewhere else.

  1. .

I first thought that the sticks would be too hard to strike with or too padded for the true feel of impact. Not the case.

The sticks are light weight, close enough to fighting weight, and padded just enough so that you and your sparring partner know and react accordingly to being hit without the broken bones and lacerations.

A great tool to reinforce lessons.

  1. EDIT: I forgot to mention one issue. The weight of the larger diameter set of sticks is not as evenly matched as the smaller set. To be more specific, one stick weighs about 225g, while the other weighs about 311g. This translates to a roughly 40% weight difference, and is quite noticeable. As rattan is a natural product, variations in weight, thickness, color etc. are to be expected. But this weight gap is a bit much. A threshold of no more than 20% difference would be more reasonable. If I had the ability, I would remove one star for this lapse in attention to detail.

    Otherwise . . .

As the title says, these are some good quality rattan sticks for the price. I use them for escrima class. The two sets I received were nicely matched, with one set coming in at 7/8" diameter (perfect in this beginner's opinion) and the other set coming in at just a hair over an inch in diameter (extra weight requires more strength, experience). Though not quite comparable to a hardwood like oak or walnut (I never have seen kamagong or bahi), these sticks are fairly dense and have a substantial weight to them. By contrast, I have seen much, much lighter rattan/bamboo sticks brought in by other classmates.

Though they are finished enough to start training with, I took some sandpaper and sanded them at the joints and also slightly rounded/beveled the ends. This helps prevent splintering. If I can find a grill big enough, I will probably throw them for a few minutes after a barbecue in order to get some nice markings and further cure them. I got the tips on preparing manau rattan from a guy named Stickman, which can easily be found via a web search. Even with the effort required to further make them suited for escrima training, I think these are a great value compared to the inexpensive, cheesy lacquered sticks you will find elsewhere.

Overall, the quality you are getting for the money is top notch and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this product to other aspiring escrimadors.
