- I ordered this staff to use in Filipino Martial Arts practice. I initially ordered a 60 inch staff but received a 72 inch staff. I decided to keep it as it was still suitable for what I needed. The staff itself is somewhat flimsy considering how thick it is in diameter. It appears to be skinless rattan that has a lot of flex. I will use it primarily to practice angles of defense/attack and staff handling skills but I will not use it for contact practice/sparring due to the flex.

- The class opened up to gails of laughter at this two by four I was swinging. I didn't know if I looked like a martial artist or a shepherd. I think my sensei would have had more respect for me if I was swinging a loaded bed pan at him. I went ahead and finished the class with this Arkansas death implement. Although its great to make you look like youve lost weight because I looked like a grass hopper swinging a sequoia tree making my stature look rather lillipution in comparison to the neanderthal club I was wielding. The wake of air that followed it after each swing did send women and children and small farm animals clammering for safety. But, you better bring a back up because an eighty year old man will be faster than you trying to swing this hedge post.
- I ordered this staff last summer and upon receiving it, found it to be nothing like the description. Fist of all, it was a three piece staff, which eliminated the flexibility a good bo is supposed to have. Secondly, it is two to three times as thick as a real bo, and extremely heavy. The "cord" grip is actually a shoelace-like string that comes off easily after handling the staff for a couple days, and the glue underneath sticks for good, so you get a sticky-hand bludgeoning stick.
Oh, and the icing on the cake? It was a "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle" staff, in box, with the name "Leonardo" emblazoned in big letters with a picture of the purple-masked cartoon character on the front. Don't waste your time or money on this. Spend the extra cash and go to a real martial arts supplier or website.
- The first thing that made me question the value of the staff was the box with "Staff of the Ninja" emblazoned on the front like some mocking banner. First of all, I've never heard of a ninja using a staff (they were assassins not back-packers). I wasn't too worried about it being a 3 piece, but when I saw that you had to screw the two end pieces on, I was terrified. Then I go outside to test it, by taking a swing at a tree. Not even a real swing, more like a half-swing, like I wasn't even trying. The end piece of the staff flew off and landed about 10 feet behind me, but not only that, it split the second end piece so it will no longer screw on tight. completely useless and a waste of money.
- The staff is good and heavy.. .that's good if you want to practice real training and not just look good. Problem is... it's in three sections... all wood.. and all attached together with hardware drilled into the end of each section.. .do a spin and drop the staff once on a hard surface... and the wood cracks. After that .. you're never going to keep the pieces together. This is not a staff for someone serious about working out. However, it is pretty.. if you just want to hang it on your wall .. go for it... that's all it's good for.
- The staff is way too heavy and too thick. i cant use it for a bo staff it just dosent seem to be what its made for. how they can call it a bo staff i have no idea. i receved the item later than the eta was suppose to be and the item was damaged a big crack right where the end of the stick scrwed together, tryed to email the company through amazon and on there own site 4 times and no one got back to me. so if you are thinking about something to scare the chickens out of your yard this is the stick for you, if you want a bo staff that flexes like it should and is light weight and comfortible look some were els.

5 comments about 50" Hardwood Jo Staff - 50 inches.
- Very lightweight, fragile, and poorly finished. Not sure what the "hardwood" actually is. It looks oak-like, but is far too lightweight for it's size. It came a bit rough and splintery and only got worse over time. The lacquer or whatever it is that they finished it with developed spiderweb cracks almost immediately and then began to flake off. I only used it for kata; didn't feel safe actually hitting anything with it let alone using it to defend against a weapon for tandem drills. After a few months of very little use, mostly sitting on the rack, it began to develop cracks. Perhaps it wasn't dried properly when they applied the finish? Regardless, the one I received (50" model) was cheap junk. You get what you pay for... Not only not recommended, but downright dangerous if you hit anything with it. Spend a little more to get better quality.
- This was exactly what i expected and came in less that a week. Very happy.
- This bo staff is very solid. A little heavier than I expected but works great for Bo Staff drills. Received promptly and in great condition.
- I ordered the 72" version of this Jo staff and was very surprised at just how durable it appeared to be. Placing it atop a stool, I was able to put a considerable amount of pressure against this thin looking piece of wood, without any damage whatsoever. I would highly recommend this staff to anyone, who thinks that it will actually see real martial arts action.
- This is a heavy (as it should be), nicely finished stick with no surface flaws, that looks good and has not warped after several years. It is exactly 1" in diameter and not tapered (or, if it is tapered, it is less than 1/32", which seems to be the margin of error along the length). If you have very large hands, you may find 1" to be slightly thin; for average hands, it should be fine.

- First rate product. Unusually hard wood (good for a fighting stick). Price was right. Delivery was prompt. All in all, a terrific product at a great price with good service!
- I bought this jo to practice Aikido techniques with. I made the mistake of letting my son use it. I will probably not see it again. It has a very nice feel to it and is very solid. It is not to heavy to practice with although I haven't tried to hit anything hard with it. I think it could stand up to some punishment. I have ordered a second and will probably have to order another if my grand daughter gets a hold of this but it will be worth it. If you are looking for a solid jo for practice or defense this would be a good choice. In fact you might want to get two.36" Hardwood Han Bo
- Those who are involved in martial arts weapons are usually familiar with the Bo, which is about 72 inches in length and the Jo, which is about 48 inches in length. The hanbo is usually about 36 inches in length. The great advantage of using the hanbo is that the length is the same as a police riot stick. The techniques you can use with the hanbo can relate directly to the use of the police baton. The length of the hanbo is also ideal for weapon to weapon practice, such as counters to sword, bo or jo attacks. In my system (Bushi Satori Ryu) we practice with the hanbo rather than the bo or jo. I found this model ideal for not only striking and practicing the sword cutting movements, but one can also perform numerous control holds with this weapon as well. In conclusion, I recommend this hanbo for anyone interested in hanbo-jutsu. Rating 5 stars: Joseph J. Truncale

5 comments about 72" Hardwood Bo Staff (+$5.00 Extra S & H).
- Mine broke within the first hour of use, and I was being very gentle. These look good, but are very brittle.
- I am into fighting of all sorts and i was really interested in the Bo Staff seeing this as a good thick staff i ordered it. I was not disappointed not only is it beautiful thick and Durable it is a piece of work. I just tested trying to break it by applying all my weight on it and could not even make it budge it does bend and thats good and it is A good weight. just as something to show off or train with its a great piece of wood.
- This Bo staff is heavy so i wouldn't recommend it for beginners but it is also fragile. I wrapped the middle part of it in electric tape for more support and grip and then i hit the ground in and exercise and I heard a snap. I checked under the tape and saw a huge crack right in the center. I would not recommend this for use or beginners.
- ive had mine for about a month now. didnt order it off of here but got it from a martial arts school for about 10 bucks less(it is after all just a stick) and i love it. im pretty much just starting out on okinawan bo fighting and a little bit of quarterstaff alongside to broden my techniqe. aside from a few scratches from me dropping it, it still looks brand new and still spins evenly and freely.
- This was the second bo I purchased, the other is a white wax wood staff that is tapered. This "hardwood" bo, which I believe to be made from pine, is just a smidgen lighter and is also a bit less durable. This makes sense, with density intuitively comes durability in my mind, but the difference in durability is HUGE! Let me be clear, both have had the same treatment I believe, but the "hardwood" bo is showing damage and wear much more quickly. This could just be the varnish or lacquer or something, but it is noticeable. Still no cracks in either though after a month of pretty hefty use versus a friend with some shinai.
If you are looking for a cheap light bo with a nice finish, this is the stick for you. Although, you may be just as well served going down to a hardware store and cleaning up a six-foot wooden dowel. That's for you to decide.
