1. This is a handy little baton, especially for discrete carry. As with other ASP batons, there is a spring clamp in the base of the handle. Swing the baton firmly, and the two nested steel rod sections extend from the grip, friction locking together to form a 16" steel rod. You can remove the end cap to adjust the tension of the retention spring, which will change the amount of force needed to deploy the baton. Tap the tip on the floor once or twice to loosen the friction lock joints and the baton collapses back into the handle. I got the federal style with the non-slip grip - very nice. Consider getting one of the belt holsters, too, because if you've got it in your pocket, it would probably a considered a concealed weapon. As always, check local laws to see what sort of trouble carrying this will get you into.

1. Something like this should be easy to carry. This slapper it's not. Make it two inches shorter, 1/8" thinner and 1/4" narrower and you got something. The strap should be eliminated - it's just cumbersome - and the handle should be contoured to allow a better grip. Also... it should be at least 3 ounces lighter. You want to knock somebody down, not kill them.

1. Be careful about buying from marketplace sellers, especially SinCitySecurity. They are falsely advertising thier "solid-steel stick" as the ASP Federal Baton. The real ASP baton, which I have recently purchased, is excellent. It is sturdy, rigid, and a great concealed weapon for self-protection. I recommend buying directly from Amazon than from its marketplace sellers or Zshops.
